ENHANCED GRANTWRITING AND FUNDRAISING at THE EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE FIRST SESSION-SUMMER SESSION 2016

2 06 2016

Don Chalmers, Adjunct Member of the Faculty

This course helps students understand and appreciate United States philanthropy especially  non-profit organizations and what they must do to seek and secure outside funding.  We’ll define and discuss key components of developmental readiness like board development and strategic planning that funders view as important to organizational sustainability.  We’ll learn how to research funding sources.  A primary focus of the course is grant writing, specifically how to prepare a competitive grant application to a corporate, foundation or federal source.  The course also shares keys to successful grant administration and other resource development activities.  These activities include annual funds, special events, contracting, planned giving, in-kind contributions and more.

Sample student evaluations:

“I would highly recommend this class to others. Don is a thorough and thoughtful instructor. The book was affordable, and the perfect complement to his knowledge and experience in grant writing and fundraising. Lectures were highly informative. All subject matter and coursework was in line with the syllabus. My work was fairly evaluated with appropriate and meaningful suggestions for development and improvement. All students were encouraged to participate with group work and the expectations were clear and concise. Don is a wealth of information and I feel privileged to have taken his class this summer.”

“Don is very helpful and has a wealth of information for those interested in writing grants for existing non-profits and those with interests in grant-writing. I enjoyed learning from him and he is a great resource for Evergreen. Don has a special talent of engaging the students in ways that will make them critically think about what is required to write a successful grant proposal.”
